Navpatrika Puja Vidhi

  • After the Mahasnan, also referred to as Kolabou Snan in Bengal, bestows the endless blessing of Goddess Durga upon the worshipper, the celebration of Mahasaptami begins.
  • Nine different plants are combined to create Navpatrika, one of which is a branch from the bilva tree. A ceremonial river bath is offered to Navpatrika. The object is then covered in crimson or orange cloth and set on a wooden seat next to Goddess Durga.
  • The devotees position a mirror so that Goddess Durga can be seen in it while performing the Mahasnan ceremony. By gathering many puja necessities, the Goddess Durga in the mirror is given a sacred and ritualistic bath.
  • The worshipper can take a bath in a holy river, and Navapatrika can also take a bath in the holy water of other rivers. The Navapatrika is bathed in the waters of the Ganges and Saraswati Rivers, rainwater, ocean, the water from the lotus pond, and finally the waters of the spring.
  • Navapatrika is now decked up to look like a Bengali bride, resplendent with the graceful white saree, and the garlands of flowers.
  • Post the Mahasnan, Pran Pratishtha is performed wherein, the idol of Mother Durga is placed on the altar, which is cleaned, and Mother Durga is decorated with flowers and sarees.
  • Worship sometimes is done on the banks of the ghat.
  • Shodashopachar Puja is performed as the next step, wherein Mother Durga is worshiped with 16 different items.
  • Sandalwood paste is applied on the Navapatrika, and flowers are offered and then placed on the right of Lord Ganesh's idol, his wife.
  • Maha Mangalaarti is performed after which prasad is distributed.
